Our diet plays an important role in building strong and healthy immune system. It is, therefore, necessary to give equal importance to the food we eat and how active we are, especially in these times. Food plays a huge part in keeping us healthy and so we need to make sure we are eating a variety of foods to get all the right vitamins and nutrients. Try and include lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables in our diet as they are rich sources of essential micro-nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

Add foods rich in vitamin C like citrus fruits, foods rich in zinc, like whole grains, dairy products, nuts etc. in the diet. Eating freshly cooked food, preferably home cooked, is advised, because it will be nutritious and hygienic for us, thereby reducing risk of gut infections. Adding milk and milk-based products like curd will help in maintaining good gut health, and food fortified with Vitamin D can be a useful contribution, too in these uncertain times where exposure to sunlight is limited. Drink plenty of watery ideally 8-10 glasses a day. Avoid sugary drinks. Instead, replacing them with lemon water, adding cucumber or herbs like mint leaves and parsley are great ways to hydrate during the day. Other options may include fresh citrus fruit juices, coconut water, etc.

A healthy body with a healthy mind, along with all the necessary precautions such as hand washing, wearing a mask and maintaining social distance, shall make us well prepared in the fight against COVID-19.
